Yellowstone National Park

We needed to find a place to stay for the night so we headed out the west gate and just outside we came across the Hibernation Station Hotel. This was a really fun place that was made up of small log cabins with large beds made from naturally shaped logs, a fireplace, which would have been fun if the outside temperature had not been in the 90's. This was pretty reasonable and the visual appeal was to much to resist.

After a good nights sleep, we got up and found a small restaurant serving breakfast, headed back to the cabin to pack up, and drive back into the park for the main attraction.

There has been so much written about the Old Faithful geyser that you would expect it to be a massive event to behold but that was not quite true. It does go off about every 90 minutes and reaches an average height of 145' but can range from about 105' - 185'. The hole that it comes out of is amazingly small but the pressure is so great the this 1 1/2 - 5 minute plume pumps out about 4,000 - 8,500 gallons of water each eruption.

The tough part is that you set up to watch the eruption about a half hour before so that you have a good seat and sitting in this hot sun with hundreds of other people, you are thinking about how nice it will be to get this viewing over and grab a cold one in the air conditioned store.
